American Citizen Freed From Detention in Belarus

Secretary of State celebrates the 47th U.S. citizen released since President Trump’s inauguration at a cabinet meeting.

Special Envoy for Hostage Response Adam Boehler announced that Belarus has freed American citizen Youras Ziankovich from detention. Ziankovich was arrested in Moscow and transported to Belarus in 2021, where he was accused of participating in a U.S.-sponsored coup to remove Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko. Belarusian agreed to free him without negotiating a prisoner swap.

Belarus has had a tenuous relationship with the United States in recent years, but Envoy Boehler said the country is interested in “trying to warm relations with the United States,” and “they know that President Trump is not going to do anything if they’re holding Americans.”

“Thanks to [President Trump], Belarus has released another wrongfully detained U.S. citizen,” Secretary of State Rubio posted on Wednesday. “No president has done so much, so quickly to keep Americans safe abroad.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Rubio and Envoy Boehler as they seek the release of Americans being held in foreign countries.
  • For discernment for President Trump as he engages with foreign leaders and dignitaries.
